So, I wanted to drive my car for a while to clear my mind, and in true CDMX fashon, there was a protest.
This time, cyclists. And I get why. Streets got way more dangerous for cyclists since the pandemic had traffic go down and speeding go up, and people who often cycle for a living; delivery people, are having more and more work given lots of people are staying at home.
A cyclist was run over recently, and the car’s insurance company found a way to deny coverage, so he’s gonna loose his leg.
Its not often that you can stand in the middle of Arquimides and just see no cars. The places they protested in are pretty significant, Insurgentes recently got a temporary cycle lane that is becoming more controversial with time and many urbanists and cyclist want it to become permanent. Also Reforma, between fuente de petroleos and the gates to Chapultepec park, where cyclists got a shitty geo-cell-rock filled path, and polanco. Polanco being one of the most privileged neighborhoods, and one stubbornly denying cycling paths despite being mostly flat and filled with take-out restaurants.
So, I stood in silence as they blocked the roadway, and just observed. I guess.

Bikes were on the roads before cars existed
, people need to learn that they have every right to use surface streets (and use the entire lane!) just like cars & trucks.

I mean, legally... Cyclists have very powerful rights in this city... But they’re often ignored to say the least. I think they have lots of good reasons to protest, and I saw it like a rather peaceful event, which is unusual here. I even felt comfortable enough to walk into the middle of it once I had parked my car ... Which for me would’ve been impossible in most protests.
I will admit, I cycle a lot and I understand what they’re on about.

Yeah, the problem with legality is that laws don’t change physics.
As with motorcycles, the reality
is that regardless of who’s at fault, you’re still dead.
